Fashion designer Michelle Smith was surprised by her relationship with SoulCycle star trainer Stacey Griffith.
On Tuesday’s episode of the “Tamron Hall Show,” the Milly co-founder — who split from husband Andrew Oshrin in 2017 — said the romance was “not anything I expected … Just it happened.”
Smith, 48, said although her family and friends are now “very accepting,” they were at first surprised that she was dating Griffith, 52, since she had lived a “traditional heterosexual life” and, up until that point, “never felt attraction to a woman before.”
“This is my first time,” she said, “but now my life is very different in the way that I perceive people and perceive love is very different.”
Smith and Griffith made their relationship Instagram official in October 2019 after creating a lot of buzz at events in the fashion and fitness industries for more than a year.
Smith told Hall she identifies as “pansexual” and pointed out that she didn’t see Griffith for her gender when she fell in love with her.
“I saw her for her energy and her beautiful light, and it felt very natural,” Smith told Hall, adding that she didn’t feel any sense of “torment or conflict” when she started having feelings. “I wasn’t scared at all.”
